Phoenix History & Facts

The history of Phoenix is a colorful one that started with the Hohokam people who inhabited what is now Greater Phoenix until around 1450 A.D. They created the first major urban civilization in the Salt River Valley and developed a canal system that is still in use today.
 
Fort McDowell was established in 1865 by the U.S. government and settlers, such as Jack Swilling, who began farming the land. The city of Phoenix was established in 1868. After two years, the first survey and census noted that the city was about a mile long and half-mile wide with 74 dwellings and a population of 250. In 1881, Phoenix became an incorporated city with a government consisting of a mayor and four council members.
 
The city of Phoenix gradually continued to grow into a major American City. Greater Phoenix now covers about 2,000 square miles and has a population of more than 4 million.
 
Phoenix is the United States’ fifth-largest city with a population of over 1.6 million. There are six lakes within a 75-minute drive of Phoenix.
Greater Phoenix is home to nearly 200 golf courses. Arizona is home to 22 American Indian tribes.
Phoenix is home to the largest municipal park in North America. South Mountain Park and Preserve covers more than 16,500 acres and has more than 50 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails.

Scottsdale History & Facts

The history of Scottsdale began in 1888 when Winfield Scott, an Army Chaplain, purchased 640 acres of land in what is now the downtown Scottsdale area. Scott believed that the land had potential for farming operations because of the climate and access to irrigation. Many people from the East and Midwest decided to follow him. The area saw a population boom between 1908 and 1933 and drew many educated and cultured people, including prominent businessmen, artists, and architects like Frank Lloyd Wright. The town was officially incorporated in 1951, and the population grew from 2,000 to over 202,000 over the next fifty years. Scottsdale has a truly unique culture that has drawn people from all over the world to move to and visit.
